Ms. Malhotra has traveled widely throughout India and abroad, including in Pakistan, Bhutan, Indonesia, and China.
Jyoti visited Pakistan twice, and her travel content from there reportedly triggered red flags for Indian intelligence agencies.
What’s the reason for her being investigated?
About two months ago, Jyoti shared some videos from Pakistan about local markets, religious places, bus rides, etc. She had an Instagram caption that said, “Ishq Lahore” (Love for Lahore). Her content frequently drew comparisons between Indian and Pakistani cultures and showcased Pakistani cuisine.
The first time Jyoti visited Pakistan in 2023, her visa was reportedly arranged with the help of commission agents. During this visit, he met Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Dennis, an official of the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi. The two reportedly grew close and Rahim later introduced him to some people he believed were linked to Pakistani intelligence.
He allegedly continued to communicate with these individuals even after his return to India. Officials asserted that he had disseminated sensitive information about military movements and locations in Haryana and Punjab, acting as a member of an intelligence network.
(Connections to Pakistan & Beyond) Reportedly, he was hosted in Pakistan by Rahim’s associate Ali Ahwan who also uploaded videos of his visit to Kashmir in 2024, Dal Lake and Srinagar-Banihal railway line.
Investigators also claimed that she developed a close relationship with a Pakistani operative and accompanied him to Bali, Indonesia.
Counter Terror Operations; Arrested Jyoti Malhotra was arrested shortly after India launched "Operation Sindur", a retaliatory measure for the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people. Ehsan-ur-Rahim was deported from India on May 13 on espionage charges after the raid.
