Singapore COVID-19 Cases Surge: Latest Update on Rising Infections in 2025

Singapore COVID-19 Cases Surge

New Delhi: A new wave of COVID-19 is emerging in certain regions of Southeast Asia, with countries such as Hong Kong and Singapore experiencing a significant rise in cases. China and Thailand are also indicating a significant increase in infections.  It is noteworthy that Singapore has experienced a 28% increase in cases over the last year, with 15,060 cases reported by May 3.

As reported by Bloomberg, this revival seems to be connected to a new wave of the virus spreading through Asia. In China, the number of cases is nearing the peak levels of last summer, while in Thailand, there was an increase after the Songkran festival in April.  With the situation evolving, specialists are advising individuals to adopt additional safety measures.

COVID-19 Cases Rising in Singapore At present, two primary variants — LF.7 and NB.1.8 — prevail in Singapore.  Both are associated with the JN.1 strain of the virus.  According to health officials, these two variants together account for over two-thirds of the country's infections.

Who is Risky?

Individuals whose immune systems are compromised have a higher susceptibility to infections.  People with preexisting health issues are at greater risk.  As per medical professionals, the present weather might also be a factor in reducing immunity, thereby increasing susceptibility to the virus.  This is the reason why it is advised that people in Singapore receive booster vaccinations.

Symptoms Resembling the Typical Flu According to Singapore’s Ministry of Health, although it appears that people’s immunity is waning, there is no indication that the current variants are spreading more rapidly or leading to more serious illness than earlier ones.  Physicians are likening this new surge of COVID-19 to an ordinary seasonal influenza.  A CNA report indicates that the majority of individuals are recovering rapidly and without major complications.

On Friday, Bloomberg reported that health authorities in Singapore and Hong Kong have issued warnings due to a resurgence of COVID-19 cases. Albert Au, head of the Communicable Diseases Branch at Hong Kong’s Centre for Health Protection, stated that virus activity in Hong Kong is currently “quite high.” He pointed out that the proportion of respiratory samples testing positive for COVID-19 has recently hit its highest level in a year.

According to the center’s latest data, the week ending May 3 saw 31 severe COVID-19 cases — the highest in nearly a year. Even so, the current wave hasn’t yet reached the extreme levels seen over the past two years. Still, signs of active virus spread are clear across the city of more than 7 million people, with rising viral loads showing up in wastewater, and more people seeking medical care or being hospitalized due to COVID.

Surge in Cases in Singapore:

This month, Singapore’s Ministry of Health provided its first case number update in almost a year, estimating that COVID-19 cases rose by 28% in the week ending May 3, reaching approximately 14,200.  In the same timeframe, the number of people admitted to hospitals daily because of COVID-19 increased by almost 30% in comparison to the prior week.
